Desert Plants in Bloom VI SOLD

Desert Plants in Bloom VI
Little Gem 6x8
oil on canvas mounted
DAY 13 of the thirty day challenge...closing in on the halfway mark...

Purple and green...desert colors?  Well, they must be as I am off to the side of the bike trail taking a photo.  Some riders don't understand what I am doing and most days somebody asks me if I am all right.  There are walkers on the trail with cameras.  They understand the beauty of the desert.

I would love to know the names of these desert plants so I could tell you.  When I did a google search, I got names, scientific and otherwise, but no photos.   Now how is that supposed to help me?

I find myself rarely using a brush anymore.  Almost all of my thirty paintings are palette knife paintings.

  1. Purple and green go so well together. I love putting these two colours together. I like the pink offsetting them

    1. Thank Marion. I am finding how much fun it is to pump color up just a bit on these desert plant paintings. Yet the colors of pink, purple and green are really there. I carry my iPhone in my fanny pack on bike trips (not today Saturday as it is raining cats and dogs in the desert); then when I am ready to paint, the image has automatically been transferred to my MacBook Air. These devices speak to one another. No longer are shadows black....I can see color well even in dark areas.

    1. I appreciate your word "expressive". That's how I feel about this painting too. The palette knife is my top all time tool, especially on the Little Gems being painted in the thirty paintings in thirty day challenge.

  3. Wonderful! Oh I hate that too. I tried to look up trees from Arizona, but I never did find out what they were.

    1. There is a market out there for us to write a book for novices on the desert plants of NM and AZ. I was in Norway this summer and absolutely yearned for a beautiful book on the Norwegian painters of the 19th century. I wrote to the National Museum in Oslo and it took them a few months to reply with: "there isn't one but when I return to Norway in December, I can do research in their archives".

No, it's a book we want. A book with pictures.

  4. I love this painting! The colors sing and there's a looseness that is very appealing to me.

    1. Wow....terrific idea...to describe a painting with the word "sing". Indeed painting is poetry to me.

  5. Your colors--mauves, violets and greens--are absolutely subtle and gorgeous! Yes, we sometimes have to get off the beaten path to see the beauties around us better.
